The Pleasant Valley Community School District was formed in 1957 when the small Riverview and Pleasant View schools were determined to be too limited to support a full high school program. Construction soon began on a $1.36 million junior senior high school on a 40 acre site along Belmont Road near Bettendorf’s northeast city limits. The school opened on September 12, 1960, and its first graduating class of 24 seniors completed their studies in 1962. Under the leadership of the first principal, Richard Klahn, the district quickly developed a reputation for academic excellence, with early teachers either holding master’s degrees or actively working toward them.
In 1966, the district expanded when the LeClaire and Cody school districts merged with Pleasant Valley. Enrollment grew rapidly, prompting a multi phase building program with additions completed in 1967, 1971, and 1974. Junior high students were later moved to Blackhawk Junior High in LeClaire, now Pleasant Valley Junior High, in 1970. The district continued to build its reputation for academic quality, earning the Excellence in Education award in 1984. A voter approved $10 million bond in 1985 funded major renovations to the high school, including a new gymnasium with seating for 3,000, an Olympic sized swimming pool, expanded auditorium and library spaces, and updated administrative areas.
Continued growth led to additional improvements in 2013, when new art classrooms and the Spartan Gallery were added to the south end of the school. Former art rooms were converted into a black box theater for the drama department, which also serves as a rehearsal space for the school’s band program. These ongoing investments reflect the district’s commitment to providing modern facilities and high quality educational opportunities for its students.
